Dean's $28 Million Plus Spending Folly

Mayor Karl Dean wants to spend about $28 million over the next 15 years on moving the fairgrounds to Hickory Hollow Mall. That's the cost of leases and fixing up the space there for the flea market and other functions.

It doesn't include the city's cost
of "redeveloping" the fairgrounds into whatever pipe dream he has. The local media hasn't paid attention to the last part. Millions more may be required to prepare the site for whatever monstrosity Karl Dean and his cronies think will go there. They will have to give away the land and give a tax break to lure companies to the property.

With all of the opposition now, Karl Dean and his lapdogs should step back and consider an extensive renovation of the fairgrounds instead of spending gobs of money on moving. Leave development to private developers. The city screws it up more often than not. Phil Bredesen and Jerry Nicely were the only ones who were remotely decent at it.
